There's no real rule, but split jerk generally lets people use more weight. Splitting is the easier of the two (but still not easy).

Flexibility is a huge issue in squat jerking. If you can't overhead squat with a jerk grip, good luck dropping into a squat with 200lbs over your head.

You can jerk more behind the neck, usually.
