Posted at December 31, 1969, 6:00 pm: Define 'volume training'. Everyone can handle different amounts of volume and some may need more than others. Using high volume but submaximal weights is a good way to prepare your body for using heavier loads later in a training cycle and build some decent work capacity. At the most basic level you're right; keep getting stronger and eat enough to gain weight and you will be gaining muscle, but you can look at a lot of factors within those parameters. You could do a very low volume routine concentrating on max singles, but I think some metabolic work (fatigue from higher reps rather than tension from lower reps) should be added for 'optimal' hypertrophy. I don't know why a lot of people think that oly lifting or powerlifting routines are low volume. Most of them aren't and at the top level the volume they often use is brutal, much higher than most bodybuilding programs.
