michael: You've already taken the first step, which is huge. You've admitted and realize you have a problem and told it to others, total strangers even.

Weight loss, in theory, is as simple as mathematics. Eat less calories than you burn and you WILL lose weight. Plain and simple. However, FAT loss can be a little more complex, but even that's not brain surgery. The hard part is the desire, which you seem to have, and the drive, which you need to get.

Obviously at the size you are now, I'm not going to tell you to do 45 minutes of high intensity cardio vascular exercise a day. But try this...for one month, take a 20 minute or so walk, every day. Studies have shown that actions develop into habits if you continually repeat them every day for a 30 day cycle.

Keep an eye on what you eat. The weight watchers point system is actually pretty decent for weight loss, not necessarily good for retaining muscle, but at this point you need to melt off pounds, plain and simple.

I follow a plan where I get 60% of my calories from protein, 30% from carbs and 10% from fat. I usually eat about 1500 calories a day, mainly because I simply can't eat anymore than that, I've tried. If you have a mind for math, Each protein and carb gram is 4 calories. Each fat gram is 9 calories. So you can do some ratios to figure out how many grams of each is right for you.

Major major thing that helped me from day 1 is just looking at what I was eating. READ LABELS!!! You'll learn a great deal from those little Nutritional Information lables that are on every product you buy. Keep an eye on the macronutrients, primarily, Protein, Carbs and Fats. In the carb categoty, you usually want the fibers to be as high as possible and the sugars to be as low as possible. Fiber doesn't "count" towards your daily goal, so any carb grams that come from it can be ignored. In the fat column, try to stick to a low number of Saturated Fat grams.
