Wise men often say there are no dumb questions. But those men probably weren't aware that you were going to ask that particular question. LOL. I'm just kidding, Varney. Ask anything and everything if you want to get started on the right foot. As you said - you gotta start somewhere.

A barbell is the long bar you grip with both hands, whereas dumbbells are the shorter ones you hold seperately, one in each hand. Adjustable dumbbells are those on which you place various removable weight plates, securing the weight in place with a spring or screw clamp. Fixed dumbbells are one specific weight, so you need pairs of individual fixed dumbbells to comprise an entire set. My dumbbell rack, for example, goes from a pair of 5 pound dumbbells on up to 50 pounders, in increments of 5 pounds apiece (5,5, 10,10, 15,15 and so on).

Again, my preference to dumbbells is just that - my preference. But you will find plenty of backers on this opinion as you dig through the copious amounts of information you're about to uncover. I still use barbells and body weight exercise for variety, but the dumbbells are definitely the staple of my workout regimen. As you may have guessed, a rack of fixed dummbells is considerably more expensive than adjustables. So if you decide to give dumbbells a try, go economically by purchasing the adjustable kind (about 20 American dollars), and a modest set of weight plates in various sizes, which out here are roughly seventy-five cents per pound.

Hope this helps. Again, good luck with everything.
