Linda, you are correct and I apologize for not mentioning the minimum issue.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, after the first couple of months on TIAS, there is a minimum monthly fee. Frankly, I tend to forget about it because very few people pay it (you have to have sold less than $300 in any given month) and then you are liable for the difference betwen your commission amount and the minimum.

If you have high-end antiques and you want the TIAS software package, we recommend our Antique Arts site. This is a fixed-price deal where you just pay a monthly fee regardless of your sales. The catch is that the merchandise you have must quality -- genuine antiques, no collectibles. Period. The software tools you get are identical to those you get with your TIAS store. The merchandise is presented with all other TIAS merchandise.

There is no question that if you have high-value and highly active inventory that you'd do better at RL. Everyone would LOVE to have this, but its not very common. If you're like most store owners, you will probably find that TIAS is more cost effective -- Gray Horse's experience seems pretty typical.

The concept of 'first tier' and 'second tier' stores does not apply to TIAS; all stores are treated equally in the internal search engine and in the external feeds. TIAS does feed everything to Froogle and has been doing so since August, 2002 (we were one of their beta sites). TIAS is also routinely spidered by Google (some significant portions are done daily) and the other search engines.

Frankly the TIAS software product is also very different from Ruby Lane. TIAS is a sophisticated, full-function business management package that includes features for customer analysis, inventory management, purchasing, costing, mailing list management and other business features. A few days ago, for instance, someone was asking about CATS (an acocunting product for antiques and collectibles sites). When we reviewed the product, it turned out that virtually all the features that someone would get from purchasing CATS were already included in the price of the TIAS site and were available for free.

Ruby Lane is basically a catalog-management product; it does not have a shopping cart nor does it have much in the way of a toolset for business management. This isn't necessarily bad, I don't think (the product is smaller and simpler to use, precisely because it does not have those features).

But the two products are not at all equivalent.

So one of the other factors you should consider is 'what kind of tools do I get for my money and what could I do with my business if I did have such tools'.Nancy Miracle
