The problem with AuctionBuyer's numbers is that he's (she's?) only using the numbers for one item. In order to get your inventory seen, you have to list tons of stuff every month and pay listing and maintenance fees on each and every piece.

When you compare the costs of one sale, RL almost always comes out ahead. It's when you start adding up the maintenance fees for all those items that DIDN'T sell that you run into problems. If you consider your monthly maintenance fee total as part of the cost of that one sale, you'll see your profit go out the window.

Example for a charter member: (fees for non-charter members are double)

I list 100 items in one month.................$ 12.50
I owe maintenance on 900 items.............112.50
monthly advertising fee...............................5.00

amount owed to RL for one month...........130.00

Sales 10 items @ $30.00 each.................(300.00)

Profit........................................................ 170.00(actually less because I haven't covered the cost of purchasing those 5 items)

The cost for listing and maintaining just those 10 sold items may be only a dollar or two, but when you include the costs for your other inventory, well, you see what happens. And don't forget, you pay that maintenance fee EVERY MONTH. At the end of a year, you've paid an enormous amount just in the hope that someone will see your merchandise.

For the same ten sales on TIAS, I would have paid $30.00 with no extra maintenance fees tacked on, no matter how long those items sat there.

If you could list items and have them sell in the first month, that would be fantastic, but sales are inevitably slower on RL because they rank lower in the search engines.Lenne
