Posted at December 31, 1969, 6:00 pm: Ahem! I hate to disillusion you about RL, auctionbuyer, but one can definitely find 'new, giftware, repros, replicas and other non antique or collectible items' in some of the shops there. There are artisan items listed in collectibles: you know, items cobbled together from several different old pieces the way they show you how to do it on the decorating shows. There are fantasy items with faked marks. Dinnerware made in China in the last few years. Yeah, flea market -- that's right! While most shops don't have these items, the ones that do sell such things don't identify them plainly at RL. At TIAS you can sell a wider range of merchandise --but honest identification is the key. At RL, selling the items you mention is nominally against the rules, so some dealers play coy. An honest flea market can be the source for many a treasure; a fancy antiques shop with hidden repros/fantasy items with false marks/ 'marriage' pieces tells me: Let the buyer beware! Why the honest shops -- not to mention the owners -- want this less than straightforward environment is anyone's guess. Perhaps it has something to do with listing/maintenance fees for every item -- and any item?
