Posted at December 31, 1969, 6:00 pm: You spend the entire movie watching thousands of anonymous people being herded around in black and white with virtually nothing to distinguish one of them from any of the others; which is the way the Nazis saw them, I daresay. And in the midst of that, one of them is highlighted in a way that reminds you that all of them might as well be, because none of them are anonymous. They're all unique. The girl, to me, serves as a reminder of that. The fact that such a reminder is necessary speaks to how effectively the anonymity of the camps is portrayed in the first place Or maybe not. Who knows? It's poignant and interesting and makes me think about these sorts of things. That's good enough for me.
