As long as the material, regardless of what it is, is handled with the utmost reality, I don't think something can be in bad taste. To me, bad taste is something that blatantly exists only to offend. Hills may offend, and it certainly was intended to engage the audience, but the ways it does are so seamless that no one scene begs for attention. To me, it isn't a "look what we can do!" film, like this recent crop of "torture" horror has been.
