"Probably the most common, particularly in bluegrass, is the open G tuning (gDGBd). In earlier times, the tuning gCGBd was commonly used instead"

For 5 string, yes. You probably wont find gCGBd very much at all anymore.

4 string is different. CGBd is standard four string tuning. DGBd is still used, just not as much. Think of it as standard guitar tuning and drop D. One tuning is still used a lot, but not nearly as much.

You can tune yours whatever way you want. If you're a bass or guitar player you will probably find DGBd easier (it's like the 4 highest strings of open G tuning on guitar) but you will lose some range.
