DGBd is still used, just not as much. Think of it as standard guitar tuning and drop D. One tuning is still used a lot, but not nearly as much. You can tune yours whatever way you want. If you're a bass or guitar player you will probably find DGBd easier (it's like the 4 highest strings of open G tuning on guitar) but you will lose some range.
