Painter automatically records your brush strokes etc. as a script, and saves these for a limited period of time defined in the preferences (1 day by default).

If you open the Scripts palette and select the date and time from the Script Selector which is relevant to the painting in question, then click on the Play button at the bottom of the scripts palette, with luck, your original brush strokes will play back, allowing you to re-save your work to a stage close to the disaster.
