Posted at December 31, 1969, 6:00 pm: Dude, there is a very high probability that I've known this song a lot longer than you, perhaps even before you were born. I've studied it, learnt it, read it, drunk it, slept it and played it on gigs. Here is the groove if you can read drum notation: http://www.intrepidsoftware.com/sgadd/gr_50.php It has nothing to do with the hi-hat part he's playing, it is a separate percussion instrument ( tambourine) being overdubbed or played live at the same time by someone else, probably Ralph McDonald, since gadd worked with him a lot. I assure you that what you're hearing which sounds like a tambourine is on the upbeat, and when it goes to the chorus, it momentarily stops and then starts again but on the downbeat. Then back to the upbeat for the next verse. It is not a click track. The very first note he plays in the song is the bass drum and hihat with the foot on beat 1. Take your counting reference from that point. EDIT: here is a portion of the song with intro, verse, chorus, and fade on verse. Check out the first bass drum and then the tambourine immediately following on the 'and'. http://jamesseph.phpwebhosting.com/DRuM's%20Stuff/50%20Ways.mp3 Original of the message was taken from http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/ Previous Post: I accually think its on the downbeat because he doesn't play the hihat...
