Posted at December 31, 1969, 6:00 pm: Constructive Criticizm is the key I think. You can be harsh with out being an asshole. Give them some pointers and then show them a piece in the same genre that reflects the quality they should be striving for. That's what help is all about isn't it? If they still dont get it then maybe some harsh criticizm is required but if some one comes to the forum looking to show their work, and it turns out they're not as good as they like to think, the last thing that would make them want to stick around is to tell them they suck and to get a clue. Example; Waaaay, waaaaay back when, my first post on Were-Here got slammed. I remember being really pissed and responding with one of those "Fuck you and fuck this forum" posts. I kept lurking and after awhile I got up the balls to post again but this time I was asking questions instead of posting crappy designs. Eventually people in those forums pointed me to some really great books and tutorials, I took some classes and came out of it a much better designer. All of that was almost ruined by an asshole who just wanted to slam me instead of giving me some contructive critique. The problem with slamming someone is that it makes it really hard for some one to come into a heated thread and try to help the thread starter. With 16 flames, including heated rebuttals from the thread starter and maybe one helpful post the user is bound to just leave. So now you haven't helped anyone and you've only succeeded in making another elitist forum for a few people that seem to get along but no longer have anything to talk about as far as design is concerned. They end up becoming pretty good e-friends and posting pictures of guys with bottles in there assholes for everyone to laugh at but the forum, who's intent was to develop a design community, has become desolate and kind of frowned on because it's now full of newbies and some friends that come across as elitist assholes.
