Posted at August 27, 2013, 2:44 pm: I have finally recovered from a torn pec, which interrupted my body building for five months. It occured when I attempted to max 265, when I felt a sharp pain in the very corner of my chest, almost near my armpit. Although I could say I maxed 265, I didn't feel like I really accomplished much, since I could barely lift my arm. I took the rest of the day easy, got online and read up on the possibilities of my injury. The next morning, I woke up on my stomach, and couldn't push my own body weight up to get out of bed, so I proceeded to roll onto my side and sit up that way. I decided to skip school, skip practice, and visit my doctor. Quick tip: If you ever hurt your chest, write that you're experiencing chest pains if you go see a doctor, they'll move you to the top of the list. After being weighed in, blood pressure taken, my doctor (who has been bodybuilding since my age) finally came in to check on me. It was obvious to him and me that I had a serious tear in my chest, because he could fit almost his whole fist in it. A few immediate suggestions were surgery, some kind of steroids, and muscle relaxers and pain killers. Scared of surgery, and opposing steroids, I chose muscle relaxers and pain killers. Besides, they made my life a lot more interesting. The injury was caused by a combination of not stretching properly, and not warming up correctly. On the day that I tore my pec, I was maxing 265, as I said before. My warm up to it consisted of: 135x5 185x1 265x1 Obviously, a stupid decision that was supposed to be a shortcut so I wouldn't be tired when I maxed. Also, If I had stretched properly in between these "warm-ups", It may have either made the injury less severe, or prevented it all together. Although this seems like common sense, I'm sure a lot of people contribute to the stupidity. If you're curious, check a few of the articles on stretching and warming up. I recommend this one for starters: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/topicoftheweek32.htm - "An Injured Bodybuilder Can't Gain Mass!" Knowledge is key, especially in body buidling. For the first two weeks of my injury, I instructed not to do anything. Not even run. This was a living hell! After the first two weeks were up, I continuted my life without lifting. I tried cutting, and lost some weight, but also gained it back rather quickly after stopping. Four months after the initial tear, I was 'allowed' to work out everything that didn't involve my chest. "Let pain be an indicator." The only thing that bothered it, that would normally not involve my chest were shrugs, squats, and deadlifts. So I avoided them too. Five months, and I was over my injury. As an example of my limitations, my flat bench was down to four sets of 135x6; 90 pounds lighter than before. After the first two weeks, I moved my weight up gradually 10-20 pounds per week. The most comfortable weight (mentally) for me is 185x8, and under 100 for inclined bench. The effects of an injury like this are insane. Not lifting for four months, my grades in school dropped, I didn't even feel like doing anything, and it was harder to sleep. Bodybuilding was a part of my (and still is) that I couldn't function without. Knowledge is key, always research everything you can before you start lifting, and don't push yourself too hard just to do more weight than the people around you. Having good form is way more important than flinging around 70 pound dumbells. Every story has a happy ending. It's August, school starts in about six days, and I've lost plenty of body fat, gotten a great tan, and went from having a flabby chest, a pretty solid set of pecs. I've passed my old max now, and I've fully recovered, and gained more than just knowledge from the experience. Having finally put up 320 pounds, it shows that extreme dedication and love for a sport won't stop anyone. Most things, I believe people should experience for themselves, but this particular one, save yourself the trouble, and stretch, warm up, and be completely dedicated to the sport you've chosen.
