I know we weren't but we are now.

Something I've been wondering...

How does the weight of a Smith machine compare to freeweights?

The bar on the Smith machine is usually always counterweighted; the bar at the fitness center at work weighs 15 lbs compared to a standard olympic bar @ 45 lbs. There must be a reason.

And I know we always say that the Smith machine forces you into one plane of motion, but does that make the weight that's on the bar easier or harder? For example, loading 6 plates on the 15 lb bar, do we literally have 285 lbs or do we have a perceived 315 lbs?

I was using the Smith machine at the fitness center at work for a few weeks, just for grins and giggles. When I went back to my gym, I was able to do more weight in the squat rack and on the bench.

Well, this was just a brainfart and something I've been wondering about.
