I've been thinking about this and it doesn't make any sense. I have some experience doing olympic lifts and all of the core lifts (squats, deadlifts, cleans, etc), but I've never really put together a program and stuck with it to see any real gains. I decided to try Bill Starr's 5x5 program, and yesterday I was trying to figure out my max's. I only front squatted 102x6, but I was able to clean 118x5, and I probably could've gone more on the cleans because I was barely dipping down. I did the front squats before the cleans so I wasn't exhausted/tired. I warmed up prior to doing the squats so that wasn't it.

My question is why can I clean more than I can front squat?

You might be bouncing off your calfs and thighs when sinking fully on ...

I'm not even sinking fully on a clean, that's the thing.

My first thought is weak quads.

That's some crazy logic!! Perhaps your ability to generate explosiv...

probably because youre a beginner and your natural strengths/weaknesse...
