Posted at December 27, 2014, 3:38 pm: How many extra calories does one really need to gain muscle? Obviously you must consume more calories than you burn, but how much more is enough? The general consensus is to eat huge to get huge. You see so many guys who post that they consume 5,000 or 6,000, or even more calories in a day. How many of those calories might be more than you need, and serve only to drain your bank account and over tax your digestive system? Let's look at a typical bodybuilder that goes on a year long bulking phase, and manages to put on 26 pounds of lean muscle. 26 pounds of lean muscle is a lot. Much more than most people will ever gain in a single year. Averaged out over a year, that gain works out to one pound of muscle every two weeks, or one half pound weekly. working it out on a daily basis, you are gaing 8 ounces of muscle a week, or 1.1 ounces of muscle a day. Think about it. If you could gain just 1.1 ounces of lean muscle every day for a year, you would gain 26 pounds in a year! How many extra calories does your body need to consume in order to produce 1.1 ounces of muscle? In order to burn fat, you must burn about 3500 calories to lose a pound. That's about 220 calories per ounce. Assuming that your diet provides for all of your basic caloric maintainance needs, what do you need to add for that 1.1 ounces of muscle you are looking for? I'm sure it takes more calories to build muscle than it does to burn fat, but how much more? Do you really need thousands of extra calories to gain that 1.1 ounce? It just seems to me that guys who are consuming thousands of calories more than thier maintainance needs every day, might be wasting a lot of calories. I would think that a lot of that is going in one end, and coming back out the other, and doing little good in between.
