It’s just over 4 weeks until the 3rd annual CalProg progressive rock festival. There are still seats available. If you have not yet made the decision to attend, I’d like to ask you to take a second and listen to our radio ad: http://www.calprog.com/Sounds/radio/CP06%20Radio%20Ad2-with%20Disclaimer.mp3 The mission of the CalProg organization is to bring the best progressive rock acts performing today to an intimate theater and provide an experience that is second to none with regards to music quality, performer accessibility, and fellowship with other music lovers. This year the artist selection committee focused primarily on bands that are relatively new on the prog scene that have made an outstanding impact on audiences in performances they have given in other parts of the country, but have never performed in the Southern California area. We think that musically this is the strongest lineup CalProg has assembled to date. But we realize some may be reluctant to spend a day with bands they are not intimately familiar with and it is for this reason that we ask you to take time to LISTEN to the extended sound samples on the http://www.calprog.com website for each of these bands. All Sound samples: http://www.calprog.com/sound_samples1.htm Kino (from the UK) – Sound Sample: http://www.calprog.com/Sounds/CalProg06_Kino_Montage.mp3 This is a “supergroup” of sorts, featuring the creative collaberation of John Mitchell (Arena) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion, Transatlantic) among others. Even though their music has been classified as everything from Power-Pop to Classic Rock with progressive overtones, their debut CD “Picture” could be found on countless Top 10 lists from 2005 progressive critics. Full of melody, rich in textured keyboards, and a generally upbeat vibe promises their performance will be a high point of the festival. And to those of you steeped in prog trivia, Pete’s appearance on the Whittier stage will complete the quadrangle that all of Transatlantic has performed there at one time or another. If that last tidbit befuddles you, just be thankful that you are not so geeky as some of us! Cryptic Vision (from Florida) – Sound Sample: http://www.calprog.com/Sounds/CP06_Cryptic_Vision_samples.mp3 These guys reportedly “set the house on fire” at ROSfest last year, the audience demanding a record 3 encores from them. The day after their performance I got multiple emails from associates telling me that they hadn’t been so blown away by a live performance since they first saw Spock’s Beard opening for Dream Theater. They will be unveiling a brand new album at CalProg called “In a World” that includes performances by Alan Morse (Spock’s Beard) and David Ragsdale (Kansas). **Note: The ALBUM includes these guests, not necessarily the live performance. This is Symphonic Prog in the grandest tradition and is sure to be a big hit with fans of classic proggers Genesis, Yes and Kansas. Helmet of Gnats (from Connecticut) – Sound Sample: http://www.calprog.com/Sounds/HOG_Wild_CalProg_Samples.mp3 Yes, the name may have you reaching to scratch imaginary bugs in your hair through its not so subliminal visual image. But these guys have developed a reputation as being a “chops heavy” proggy fusion instrumental band by playing nearly every prog festival in the country to rave reviews. My first reaction to them was that they reminded me of early Mahavishnu Orchestra, only not quite so manic. Check them out, even if you aren’t a fusion fan. You may be surprised. Presto Ballet (from Seattle) – Sound Sample: http://www.calprog.com/Sounds/CalProg06%20Samples%20-%20Presto%20Ballet.mp3 This is the hard rocking proggy side project from Metal Church’s lead guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof. Their music has been described as a cross between Deep Purple and Styx. They rely heavily on the Hammond B3, vintage keyboard sounds, crunchy guitars and a hard-driving rock sound for the underlying music. But the vocals are superbly melodic and the songs are filled with memorable hooks. And as if this wasn’t enough music for the weekend, an acoustic version of IZZ featuring John Galgano, his lovely wife Laura, and the Scottish guitar legend Paul “Brems” Bremner will be performing on the patio stage during the dinner break. And of course don’t forget the CalProg tradition of every band performing a classic prog cover song. This has been a big hit each year and promises to challenge the bands once again this year! Pre-Party On Friday night at the Uptown Whittier Radisson Hotel in the main ballroom there will be a pre-show party starting at 8:30pm featuring the music of the World/Prog/Jazz trio Nima & Merge. All CalProg performing band members, the CalProg Patrons and the Event Staff as well as anyone else who would like to come, will attend this party. There is a $10 cover charge and a “pay as you go” bar. This is a great opportunity to become acquainted with everyone in a very relaxed environment before the big show begins. So what do you say?
