I'm currently intending to return the PianoBar that I've bought by mail order because I'm not sure whether it'll do what I want. I'll keep it if it can be more use to me than I currently think.

Below are listed some of my concerns. If my assessment is mistaken, can anyone explain how I can get better use? Otherwise it goes back.

MY PURPOSE - MIDI RECORDING OF PIANO PERFORMANCE

In another posting, "How good is the PianoBar for making MIDI recordings" I explained that my objective in using PianoBar would be to make accurate recordings of piano performances benefiting from the fact that the aural feedback from a real piano can bring out better performances than playing a sampled piano from a MIDI keyboard. Sothernone of Moog Music responded that the PianoBar was designed for that purpose.

UNWANTED SYNTHESISER

The only use I have for the internal synthesiser sounds is as an aid to setting up the scanner bar, and I'd have been happy to do without that facility in return for a lower price.

THE MANUAL

I find the manual unhelpful:

(1) I don't want to read the parts about the internal synthesiser, but they're mixed in with the information about using the PianoBar as a MIDI keyboard, and I don't know which parts are irrelevant to me until I've read them.

(2) I DO want to know how to compensate for the omission of a sensor for the sostenuto pedal - a remarkable omission given Sothernone's statement about the design purpose. The manual doesn't explain how to do this:

. . (a) I don't know whether it's OK to plug a simple (on/off) footswitch into one of the three foot-controller sockets (and assign that to Controller 66) because the manual says these sockets accept an expression pedal input, with no mention of a sustain-type pedal. I'm cautious about plugging in the latter type of pedal which would "short" across the two poles of the socket, because I don't know whether that's potentially harmful.

. . (b) The manual also calls all the Controllers "Continuous Controllers", whereas control numbers 64 to 67 (and more) are switches, not Continuus Controllers.

(3) There's no mention about whether it's important to try always to get the scanner at as near as possible the same height from the keys. To eliminate stuck notes, I've had to put the scanner slightly lower than the height given by the Library Card. I don't know whether a small difference in heights will yield significantly different output velocities. How hard must I try to get the height the same evey time if I want consistent results?

NO SOSTENUTO PEDAL SENSOR

Separate from the manual's lack of instructions for provision of sostenuto pedal MIDI messages, it's awful that I'd have to either wedge a footswitch under the sostenuto pedal or fit a microswitch under the pedal or somewhere on the push rod that operates the sostenuto mechanism. Hopefully, someone can tell me that it's OK to plug a simple footswitch into the PianoBar, because otherwise I'd have to run a cable from the switch to a MIDI keyboard and merge its output with that of the PianoBar.

VELOCITY 127

Velocity 127 is output at a level somewhat below my maximum force, so in loud playing any notes meant to be more prominent won't be.

VELOCITY CURVE

There are ten velocity curves, including wierd ones like an upside-down V shape, but excluding important ones like allocating a broader range of keyboard force to velocities at the lower end. The latter can be important where (for instance) a sampled piano has been set up to play hard key strikes at MIDI velocities that you'd usually associate with more moderate playing - playing quietly is then much more difficult because all the expression has to be squeezed into a small range of keyboard force. I know it would be preferable to have the sampled piano set up better, but one would expect a MIDI keyboard to offer some help via the velocity curves - omitting useful curves in favour of wierd ones is unhelpful. I suppose the supplied "inverted" curves (more keyboard force giving lower velocities) and the upside-down V could have a use in cross-fading between different sounds, but to me that seems less valuable than a broader range of more ordinary curves. And anyway, can't there be more than ten curves to choose from?

SOFTWARE UPGRADES?

Will there be upgrades that could take account of user feedback (eg velocity curves) and, if so at roughly what cost and how would one acquire and install them?

STORING THE SCANNER BAR

The hardware comes in a padded carrying case bigger than a 5-octave electronic keyboard instrument, but with no other means of storing the scanner bar which must be taken off the piano every time you close the "lid" over the keyboard (and any other times you don't want to leave it in place). The manual warns that the scanner bar is fragile and must be looked after carefully, but the supplied carrying case takes up an absurd amount of space to use for storing just the scanner bar.

I'm not sure if you've contacted Moog directly? Although this forum is...

You can buy a fishing rod tube (this is no joke).
