Posted at May 18, 2005, 2:41 pm: I play better on a real piano than on a sampled piano (from a MIDI keyboard), because the sampled pianos that I play respond less well to touch. Whereas a real piano causes me to make subtle adjustments to my playing in order to get the sound I want, this doesn't happen with a sampled piano because, with those, I can't get the sound I want whatever I do. Therefore when I make a MIDI recording using a MIDI keyboard and a sampled piano, I have to assume that not only is the currently-achieved sound unsubtle but also the recording (and hence the potential sound with any better electronic pianos in the future) is unsubtle because I'm not getting the feedback I would need from the instrument in order to play well. If I were to record MIDI from PianoBar, there would be an opportunity to capture the intrinsically better playing that results from hearing how a real piano is responding. However, playback on the sampled pianos I currently have would probably sound no better than a recording from a MIDI keyboard because of the sampled pianos' limited range of responses to note velocities. That means I'd have no way of knowing whether a MIDI recording from PianoBar was intrinsically any better than one from a MIDI keyboard until perhaps several years into the future when electronic instruments had improved enough to show the difference. So, what I'm wondering is: just how good are MIDI recordings made from PianoBar? For instance: (1) How consistently are the note velocities generated? For instance, how much variation would there be in the recorded velocities: (a) if you played the same note with the same hardness of hit fifty times (b) if you played fifty different notes with the same hardness of hit? (2) How well do the recorded velocities represent the playing - you could get perfect consistency in question (1) by giving all notes the same velocity - do the velocities coming out of PianoBar have the capability of recreating a good performance once the electronic instruments have that capability? (3) Has anyone tried using a MIDI recording from PianoBar to play back on a real piano equipped with one of those elaborate and expensive mechanisms that will record from and play back on a real grand piano?
