I can't get over what a bad year Ebay have had in the British daily press through 2004.
There seems to have been a bad story every week or so,ranging from supposedly safe replica guns being bought at auction by Manchester street gangs, reinstated and used in robberies and murders,to rare antiquities, dug up by metal detectors and being sold out of the country via Ebay, thus avoiding the treasure trove system, to the burgled contents of stately homes being sold online also.

Now,I'm not sure if things are actually any worse in those directions, I suspect it's a kind of backlash by the British press, especially the tabloids,or Redtops as they're sometimes known. They have a tendency to write kindly on anything (or anyone) new for a year or so,and then suddenly a mass condemnation takes over. It seems as though everything written to do with Ebay was fairly kindly and positive previously, and the papers have now grown a bit bored with this approach, and decided to stir it up a bit.

It's a shame really that they should do this, but the British tabloids can be a very destructive force, and I think it would be a good idea for Ebay to try and counter this before it gets out of hand.

The Blair government have a habit of reacting in a knee jerk fashion to popular complaint and rapidly passing very punitive laws (see foxhunting which is set to become illegal in Britain at the end of January, not to mention the countrywide ban on pistol shooting and ownership even in legally run gun clubs, some years ago). The replica guns issue has actually been raised in questions by MPs in the Houses of Parliament, and is said to be an item of some concern amongst Blairs ministers. Given that we are all now supposedly happy Europeans, new laws have a tendency to spread like a nasty rash to other Euro nations, causing all sorts of problems to affected parties. As they say,the wheels of the Euro Parlaiment grind slow, but exceedingly fine!
Be careful Ebay!
