Posted at June 1, 2004, 8:58 am: I am feeling that these drop off stores that are springing up are a danger to the individualism of ebay. I feel that they are going to take one more piece out of the same pie that we are all already sharing. If everyone sells on ebay then there will be nothing to find to sell on ebay and you will have to go back to a mundane job working for someone else. Basically this is going to be corporate exploitation of an income opportunity that has been working just fine for millions of individuals. If the concept works, it will further dwindle the available inventory for individual sellers as items wont be in yard sales, estate sales, or obtained spontaneously as often. While at the same time they are promoting the idea of just how easy this is to do for a living.....when it isn't easy work. The other side of the problem or potential problem. Thinking this is going to be easy, some poor person is going to pay $10,000 for a franchise and thinking this is easy money they will start doing business and try to sell everything that comes in. They will have a high no-sale rate and a high negative feedback rating while at the same time having an occassional big hit that will keep them going(this is already happening, look at the feedback of some of the drop off stores that are already out there, it is atrocious) due to being overloaded with work and not being able to pay employees enough to stay around or work as hard as they have to in order to earn their keep. And then the ones that earn their keep will figure out that they can do it for themselves and move on leaving the owner to train yet another person. So on the other end of the spectrum, if it doesnt work and the drop off sellers get loads of negative feed back then this endeavor is going to tarnish the image of ebay sellers in general thus affecting the trust of the buyers that there already areant enough of as ebay has worked too hard to cultivate sellers and not enough to create buyers. So individual sellers will suffer either way. This is heating up too fast folks...we are all going to become victims here if it keeps going the same way. Please give me your opinions....either for against what I have said here...all are welcome.
