Posted at February 14, 2004, 9:41 pm: I was wondering if anyone had done research on the proxy bid feature and weather or not it generates more money for you? Some people call it a bidder friendly feature, meaning it keeps prices lower since bidders don't have to fight. Others have found the feature to increase prices. I know bidz.com for the longest time did not have the feature and they have now created an autobid type of proxy bidding. Some sellers report prices are lower with the new feature, but there could be other factors at work there. We ourselves are testing proxy bid out for one month, but I was wondering if anyone else has had experience in this area and would be willing to share their results or engage in a discourse on the subject. Here are the schools of thought I am looking at: 1. The idea that proxy bidding is good because it is an automatic response to a new bid thus driving the price up without having to have the original bidder log back on, it is also a nice to be able to place a bid once and leave it. Or, 2. Proxy bidding is bad because it does not force the bidder back onto the site to bid again (thus not generating more activity since they do not see the new items you have listed since the last bid), also it requires two bids of the same amount or more for the price to go up. Other auction venue owners and sellers who have constructive thoughts to share are asked to give their thoughts. This is not a one-way discourse. If you share information you have found, I will share what I have discovered.
