For any buyers who regularly buy items from the UK ,things could be a little puzzling over the next few months.The Royal Mail in the run up to the mail being opened to private enterprise have introduced a new and some would say baffling system for guaging the price of a letter of package.
Previously all mail was priced by weight. Under the new system it is priced by weight and/or size. Working this out on a large batch of parcels is not the most fun I've ever had! In fact there has been so much confusion that apparently the RM are going to issue little sized plastic trays so that merchants can work out the size/weight ratio more easliy.
According to them,this would lead to many packages being cheaper to send and a few being more expensive.Well,we've been using the new system for a few days and it seems to me that basically (we deal in vintage books) prices for UK pacels have gone up slightly,mail to Europe has gone down considerably and US mail has gone up and is in certain circumstances prohibitive.
