Posted at March 21, 2006, 5:02 pm: I run a small eBay store (about $2000 sales per month), and I recently had a problem buyer. He claimed his package was lost, wouldn't fill out any USPS trace forms or accept my offer of replacements, and filed a chargeback. He left feedback claiming I was a cheat and being investigated by PayPal, and he urged others to file chargeback if "they ever felt they had a problem". Well, lo and behold, all at once, I have a rash of buyers who, gee, claim they never received their packages either and would like a refund or duplicates right away or they're going to PayPal. I can successfully counter a number of these charges, but it's teeth-grinding, so I'm thinking of adding Delivery Confirmation to every order to shore things up against PayPal claims. My problem is that I sell mostly small items, with S&H for each order usually about $1.50 domestically. I had previously considered raising rates just for normal cost increases; now, with an apparent fraud crisis looming, adding .60 to each order puts me at a competitive disadvantage. (Not severely, but noticeably.) I note that the USPS has a significantly reduced "electronic rate" for shippers who either print shpping labels or "are capable of sending and receiving electronic files of their shipments". The former tend to be ginormous (I use #000 envelopes 80% of the time), and details on the latter are sketchy; all the USPS provides is a lengthy list of vendors who sell software that kinda sorta might help in that department. Also, I *now* see that Delivery Confirmation is for parcels only on First Class. Would padded envelopes even count under that? To the point - could anyone who uses the electronic rate fill me in as to the software and costs involved - or at least the size of the labels? Is there an alternative to Delivery Confirmation I'm overlooking? Packages are lost, and I can eat an occasional replacement. If the problem buyer's feedback is going to tempt a large number of buyers to five-finger discount their purchases, though, I need protection, but I can't boost shipping by so much I'm put at a significant disadvantage.
