Posted at August 29, 2006, 11:33 am: I'm an IT guy at a midwestern newspaper. All of our production is Mac based. I have always been a Mac person. Before I was relocated into IT, I was the graphic artist who was always fixing the Macs. The problem: The suits have decided that we will save untold mountains of cash if we ditch our Macs and switch to Windows machines. I don't agree with the decision, but once it was made there was no going back. I get to be one of the main drivers in the transition planning. Are there any resources you could point a Windows phobic IT guy towards for info on what will be involved in switching 100ish Macs to Windows machines? One of the first things we are going to deal with during our conversion planning is fonts. Keeping in mind that we will be switching over a couple of years, and we need to be able to open documents on either platform, how would you suggest we handle fonts? Should we use the postscript fonts on both platforms that we currently own and deal with whatever differences there are between the fonts, or pony up the cash and get the opentype fonts? Anyone here that is currently using Windows, how do you manage fonts? Are you just dumping them into the system fonts folder (or whatever it's called in Windows) or do you use some kind of management software like Suitcase? I realize that five out of the last six sentences end with a question mark, but hopefully someone can help me out. I hope this is the right category to post this to, if not please move it.
