G'day,

I was frolicking the cyberspace and came across a question which could have paradoxial(sp?) answer.

Does a webdesigner sell a product? Or a service?

I have no formal training in webdesign so I couldn't answer. For a few years now, I've been selling a service.

For example: A client calls, "yea, i'd like website thingy for my small business. no flashy graphics, make it look good".'

me, selling a service: Well, I can give you three different layouts and you can choose which one you like best and we can go from there. Mmkay!

This response inadvertently places a large amount of design 'power' in the hands of the client. Who usually doesn't know shit about design. A certain amount of creative control is robbed and you are left on the wrong end of the leash, hand-fed shit from a strange master.

Contrarily, selling a 'product' would be something like...
Client: Yes, I'd like a website thingy.
Me selling my product: *Bing* Here ya' go! No refunds.

I personally prefer selling a 'product' but I can never seem to bring myself to stop clients from having a certain degree of control. I like them to give me a general idea like "make it green and themed for a school" but I hate when i get a "i'd like it to flow more...and be less white, and more POW! ya' know?". The overall message is not usually conveyed well by the client and ideas can get lost in translation. That can also taint the designer-client relationship.

So, does a webdesigner(you?) sell a product? Or a service? Or are there shades of grey?

What distinguishs the two for you?
Discuss.

Replies:

Technically we sell both.

I think this applies to regular design as well; not just web design.

It's both.
