Hi, I'm thirty-eight, living in the UK and have for some time been thinking of getting into weight training for a couple of reasons, which make good sense to me. I feel completely at sea, having never worked out before, other than cycle commuting as my primary form of transport
I've been looking at free weights. I wonder if any kind person could advise me on what kind I should purchase? I've been lifting some housebricks, recently, which have had the result of toning my arms somewhat, but I could do with some proper gear, if I'm to take this seriously
My goals and reasons
I'm just embarking on a new carreer, in the funeral trade, which, as you can imagine, invloves a fair amount of lifting and carrying of weighted boxes and bags. It's important in this trade, to be able to lift and carry with a certain dignified grace, rather than huffing and straining, as I'm sure should be obvious to any sensitive person..
All my life, I've done jobs where lifting and strength is helpful, but not essential
Also, I would like the confident feeling, when wearing T-shirts and no-shirts, that my body is the best it can be, for my age. I'm a confident kind of person, but could do with the extra confidence in my ability to lift, work and stay fit, as well as like what I see in the mirror. I'm after a toned, sculpted look, which isn't just pretty, but strong and capable as well, so it's not just for looks - it's for strength, too
I'm 5 feet, 9 inches tall, used to be skinny, but have filled out a little in recent years. I don't carry much fat, other than a little more 'love handle' than I like and a slight belly (which has been improving recently) which I don't want getting any worse! I want it GONE, if possible
I did used to be extremely skinny, when I was a kid, in my twenties, having tightish abs and always nicely toned legs, from the cycling, but I could be so much better than I am now
I am no health freak, but I do eat a balanced diet and especially like meat, fish and other high protein foods. I tend to eat fresh vegetables and quality wholemeal stuff, rather than junk. I don't like fruit much and love my carbs, but lately, I have been cutting right down on fatty, carbohydrate snacks. I've seen all sorts of powders and pills, but my instincts tell me to find a natural way towards proper nutrition. Is this right
I've been looking at free weights in catalogues, but cannot decide which is the best to buy, or what amount of weight I should be lifting to start with. I've seen bars of all kinds of shapes; curled bars; straight bars; pairs of hand weights; seperate packs and compendium sets, yet cannot decide which will be best for developing my overall upper body physique. Is a bench essential for training? What kind of bar helps me to develop my neck, shoulder and back muscles
How often should I train; what kinds of repetition are necessary for strength and tone
I'm looking forward to meeting new people in here and hope I'll be able to get some sound advice to get me started
Regards
V
