Posted at April 19, 2003, 8:38 am: I have a chalkware plaque. It was carelessly placed on the ground leaning against a tree at a yard sale and the young woman said it had belonged to her grandmother who came to America from Poland in the early 1900's. She didn't care for it and sold it to me for $1.00. I have always loved it. It is a thick, heavy piece of chalkware. It is open work design of Christ on the cross. At his feet gazing up are two little angels, one on each side, all encircled in an oval. The piece is handpainted in that paint (like a semigloss acryllis paint) usually seen on most carnival chalkware pieces, but it is quite beautifully done. Not garish or overcolored, colors are: overall kind of an almond color with soft blues and delicate red touches accented with soft gold paint. The figures are also very touching to view. It is oval and is 15 1/2 in tall and 11 1/2 in. at widest point across, and it rests on a background which is a piece of blue glass mirror. On the back of that is a piece of flannel or some such material. I doubt there are any markings behind this material and I have not tried to take it off to see. It is quite securely glued on. I know these religious pieces were popular prize items at carnivals and other traveling shows in Europe in the early days. Do you think this came from there? Hope I have described it well enough to give you an idea. Can't do a pix right now, but am getting close to that capability. I have always been curious about it. If anyone knows about this picture/plaque, I would appreciate hearing from you. Yours for a peaceful world.
