Posted at July 31, 2006, 9:57 am: Hi John, I have a puzzler that I hope someone could assist with. I have what I assume is a trophy relating to horse racing or something similar. I'm wondering is it possible that this statue could be sterling? What other metal could shine up and act just like sterling?; that would have been used in this format? When I first got it the finish was a soft silver with dark areas. Being what I took for a trophy I thought it was white metal that had been plated and the plating had worn -- it was heavy for its size and a magnet doesn't stick. [SIZE 10in Tall; 10in Long; 2-1/2in Wide; a bit over 5#] Well made with exacting detail. The bothersome point tho is that the center join seam is evident and I would have thought polished out. I took my silver polish to it and was shocked to see it shine up like sterling . Even inside of the attached platform base shines up; it is rough finished but the ridges shine up. I originally thought the age to be from the early 1900s to the mid 1900s (@ 1900 to 1930); however I wonder if it could be older?; Since only light pressure was used with the silver polish and the sealer came off pretty easily I, nor my husband, can find mark one on it. There are no wear areas to show material underneath to be different than the surface. There is very little surface damage; only some very minor scratches in one or two areas. I'm looking for any enlightment. Thanks so much in advance.
