I am wondering if ALL (less jewelry) sterling items (20th century American) are marked as such. I ask because of a lovely coffee pot I have that is marked 'Wallace' and while I can find 'Wallace' in the reference book I have, there is no indication that they made silverplate items.

Also, I am confused as to whether sterling must be indicated or was it a choice made by the manufacturer? Must all silverplate be indicated as such?

Thanks for any clarification that can be given.
