Posted at March 24, 2006, 9:30 am: Has this ever happened to you? In most antique malls (and stores) there is either a place to put items that you have selected until you finish shopping or you can place them on the counter. Everyone knows those items have already been found by another shopper and it is not a place to add to your collection. Some stores even have signs to that effect. Well, the other day, I had found a cute little book from 1956 "A Young Mothers Study Club" in the very first aisle of my shopping and had put it up on the counter, along with another find. There were several other people who had done the same thing, including a lady with a large lamp. I went on to finish my shopping. When I came back up to pay for my finds, the lamp lady and her husband were already checking out with several items. The man was standing there reading my book. Now I have done that - seen something interesting and picked it to look at it but then put it back with the other stuff - they found it first!! This man proceeded to stick with his wife's stuff!!! I immediately said, excuse me, but that was in my pile!! He just laughs and everyone, including his wife gave him a funny look! He says, oh it's my daughter's birthday and this is the year she was born - I was going to buy it for her! I guess I could have been nice and let him have it for his daugher and IF he had seen me go to purchase it and then asked, I probably would have. But he was being too sneaky. He did not use Antique Mall Etiquette - even though he must have known how to!
