Wow! Could I have written that piece on the thrift shops. Here in southeast Michigan the thrift shops have nothing to offer but clothing. The pieces that are "left" for purchase are general household items, toys, etc. It was fun to scout out some treasures and take them home. I never found anything of great value, maybe a couple dollars, but mostly I keep my finds for my enjoyment. Which is why I could run a shop from all the stuff in my house - but I love it! We found out a few years ago that appraisers "helped" the thrift stores and thus, took out all the joy of the treasure hunt. The people that donated the items, didn't want it, but I am certain didn't want "appraisers" making a profit off items they thought the thrift store would sell and help the homeless or needy. That is also why I only donate clothes, I know the "appraisers" aren't going to take that stuff and therefore, I can still help the people that need help. I also found out that Goodwill Industries sells their appraised items on an auction site - this is at least a little better. I guess I will stick with the local garage, yard and church sales. Hopefully, enough people will voice their displeasure with thrift shops using "appraisers" and they will go back to the old days of general pricing and let everyone have a fair chance at items.
