I am in the UK and have an MA in Fine Arts Valuation. IF I am asked to value an item then I abide with the 'rules' laid down by the British Antiques Valuers Association - I AM NOT ALLOWED TO PURCHASE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. This is because the customer is paying for my expertise - to purchase an item could lead to proscecution as I would be abusing the position of TRUST - in otherwards it would be FRAUD!

IF however someone asks me what something is worth and they have not paid for my services then I always refuse - usually they want me to buy the item. In those circumstances I always ask what price they want for the item - I do not volunteer a price. That way there can be a perfectly legitimate sale.

I rarely advise charity shop because here in UK, MOST charity shops put items aside for the local auction house to appraise and they are then entered into their sales. This practice has upset many people as donors cannot see their items on the shop's shelves and of course customers do not get a chance to buy! It also is open to abuse as some items are 'bought' by shop workers rather than selling them at auction!

Jumble sales are not exempt from 'unethical' behaviour either - dealers often try to get in before the 'queue' and some even offer to help so they can help themseves to the pick of the crop!

Either way - these practices are self destructive because people stop going if there is nothing to buy - and - they stop donating if they suspect items are not being sold!!!!!
