Posted at July 26, 2016, 10:47 am: I can remember the excitement I used to feel when I was younger and the family all got together to go see a movie at our local theater. The place was always crowded on the weekends which made the excitement, for me, all the more intense. I loved watching the expressions of others when they talked about the movie they were going to go see. I remember many times standing in a line that wrapped around the building. I could tell my parents and older siblings hated waiting in line, but to me it was part of the experience. My younger brother would always get caught up in some video game and almost always missed the first part of the movie, I always had to go hunt him down and tell him that if Mom had to come get him he was not going to like it. Of course when I found him I got caught up in watching him play his game and even cheered him on. Sometimes Mom had to come get us both, and we both found ourselves being drug into the theater by our ears, blaming each other the whole way. No way did I want to miss the first part of the movie, but as kids often do, I lived for the moment. Unless it was some truly boring movie, it really did not matter what we went to see, the big screen, the crowd, the popcorn and soda, all of it was like magic to me. we could never get the whole family to sit down together for dinner at the table at the same time, but we sure as heck would all stop what we were doing and come together to go see the latest movie. I would look at my Mother and Father during the movie and I remember seeing an amazing thing, they would be holding hands, or my Dad would have his arm around Mom. I can honestly no remember any other time they did this. Oh I know they did, but we were never all together enough for me to see it. They would go out on their own movie dates or out to dinner and I am sure they showed the same affection then. But when we went to the movies, I got to see it! Even as comforting as this was it didnt draw my attention away from the movie for very long. I knew my eyes were as big as the rest of the people in the theater when I stared in amazement at something on the huge screen that shocked or suprised you, or was just plain cool. I loved that "movie theater" laughter, when everyone laughs at the same time, it made me feel a part of something. Other than holidays and birthdays, these were some of my favorite 'family times" as a kid. A movie can be a magic thing to a child who has not seen hundreds and hundreds of them. I still love movies and I take my family as often as times allow, but I do miss the days when waiting in line was a bit more fun.
