Posted at December 26, 2008, 8:08 pm: Not sure if this is a big televised event over in the States (Or anywhere else for that matter) but i always consider the BAFTA's to be Oscars uglier little sister. Anyone manage to catch them tonight? This year they were held at the Odeon Leicester Square in London and it seemed like the biggest turn out yet. Each year they seem to be getting more and more notice with many more stars attending. They were hosted by the legendary Stephen Fry who once again gave an incredible performance as host. I would seriously love to see this man host the Oscars. Once the academy would get over his little recognition in the States he would be an absoloute hit...although his humour is quite bizarre, for example his way of introducing Miss Theron to the stage, suggested that the audience "Smite your hands together till they bleed, blister and burn for this beautiful woman". Brokeback Mountain was the big winner of the evening picking up Best Film, Best Director and Mr Gyllenhall picking up the Best Supporting. I was really pleased for Jake getting the BAFTA, he seemed truly suprised. As did Thandie Newton for collecting Best Supporting Actress for Crash. She also gave a very sweet speech and was even quite humbled for winning. Mr Hoffman picked up Best Actor for his role in Capote and Witherspoon picked up Best Actress (Though ungratefully didnt turn up and got a wobbly Christina Ricci to accept it for her). Anyway, heres the full list of nominees below, with the winners in bold. I recognised him but have actually never seen any of his films. His a legendary British film producer whose done a great deal for British film and with titles such as The Killing Fields, Memphis Belle and Charriots of Fire to add to his name, the Academy felt he deserved the award. His acceptance speech really made the evening though. He was utterly shocked and humbled to win the award and gave a very powerful speech about his passion for film, and the reason that it stands as such an incredible medium for getting messages across. He spoke of how film has a way of connecting with every single person who engages with it, whether going to the cinema or renting a movie at home, it has a way of conveying an experience or an event that each person watching can totally connect with on an entirely private and personal level. He gave the example of the regret he felt when his father died, and when he watched The Sixth Sense for the first time, and Cole (Haley Joel Osment) says to his mother in the car that her mother said yes to her question of whether she made her proud, Puttnam said that he was now aware that no matter what, for that achievement he knew his father would be proud of him. By the end of his speech there didnt seem to be a dry eye in the house. William H Macy, Catherine Keener, Ioan Gruffudd blubbing in their seats. Was a perfect ending.
