The two-time Oscar winning actress Shelley Winters has passed. Debuting in the 1940s, Winters had a long and illustrious career in Hollywood. Working for great directors like George Stevens, Stanley Kubrick, Robert Wise, Anthony Mann, Roman Polanski, Robert Rossen, Robert Aldrich, John Frankenheimer, Sydney Pollack, Paul Mazursky, Blake Edwards and Jane Campion, sharing the screen with generations of actors including Jimmy Stewart, Montgomery Clift, James Mason, Robert Mitchum, Bette Davis, Frank Sinatra, Robert Ryan, Ricardo Montalban, Jack Palance, Paul Newman, Burt Lancaster, Robert DeNiro, Gene Hackman, Christopher Walken, Isabelle Adjani, Susan Sarandon, Lee Marvin, Danny Aiello, Liv Tyler, John Malkovich and Nicole Kidman.

She had four Oscar nominations for A Place in the Sun (1951), The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), A Patch of Blue (1965) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972), winning the Academy Awards for Anne Frank and Patch of Blue. She also had six Golden Globe nominations (with one win) and three Emmy nominations (and a win). She was equally adept at comedy and drama, and she could play anything from mousey and needy to petty and evil. She was an attractive pin-up beauty in her earliest days in the business, but as she gained weight and her looks changed she was able to morph into an impressive character actress.

Ms. Winters was eighty-five-years-old.
