So which were the best films you've seen in 2005 (but not necessarily from 2005)? I looked through Movie Tab to see which films I had seen over the year and here are those that made the biggest impression on me.

Mon oncle (1958 - Jacques Tati) I got the Tati box set for Christmas 2004 and although the other films are very good too, Mon oncle was the most heartwarming.

Bloody Sunday (2002 - Paul Greengrass) Very real and very upsetting. Greengrass really masters the documentary style drama.

Om jag vänder mig om / Daybreak (2003 - Björn Runge) There's hope for swedish film. Brilliantly directed, brilliantly acted. Runge's new film has just been released - I can't wait.

Pi (1998 - Darren Aronofsky) One of the most original films I've seen in a very long time. And one of the most impressive debuts by a director.

On the Waterfront (1954 - Elia Kazan) Brando was known as the Godfather for obvious reason. But here he also shows why he's the godfather of the naturalist acting style.

The Corporation (2003 - Jennifer Abbott & Mark Achbar) They should show this in schools. Balanced, informative, eyeopening and very well made. Class A documentary.

Napoleon Dynamite I have to stick up for this one. The dance number is reason enough.

The Brown Bunny (2003 - Vincent Gallo) My new Gummo (=nobody but me likes it). It was a very positive surprise for me and I still think of some scenes a lot (not that scene).

Sin City (2005 - Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez) Almost as good as everyone say it is. Sexist ultraviolent entertainment at its best.

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976 - John Cassavetes) Untouchable stylewise. A 1970s classic.

Tarnation (2003 - Jonathan Caouette) Much debated about on this forum, but I was very impressed and moved by it. I fail to see how Caouette will be able to live up to this one.

Elling / Me, My Friend and I (2001 - Petter Næss) Probably one of the absolute best films about people with mental disorders. Hillarious and very warm.

Der Untergang / Downfall (2004 - Oliver Hirschbiegel) A dramatic colossus. Hitler lost everything but Bruno Ganz triumphs in his depiction of Der Führer. Dense. Thrilling. The fall of the 3rd Reich...

Blow Up (1966 - Michelangelo Antonioni) Stylish and absorbing by the master of nothingness and open ends.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988 - Martin Scorsese) Still the best film ever made about Jesus?

Stevie (2002 - Steve James) James is responsible for two of my favourite documentaries: first Hoop Dreams (1994) and now Stevie.

Vozvrashcheniye / The Return (2003 - Andrei Zvyagintsev) Possibly the best film I've seen this year, arguably the most amazingly looking. It's so beautiful it hurts.

Most Overrated:

Million Dollar Baby (2004 - Clint Eastwood)
Capturing the Friedmans (2003 - Andrew Jarecki)
Garden State (2004 - Zach Braff)
