Posted at August 27, 2014, 8:24 am: From Kentuckiana Parent Magazine: Quote: Easter Bunny Blues by Cynthia Lovan Fluffy, new and adored quickly turns to forgotten, neglected and abandoned. Sadly, that is the fate of most "Easter Bunnies." Tracy Thom, director of Tri-State Rabbit Rescue in Northern Kentucky, sees where these impulse buys end up. "I get so many desperate calls and e-mails from shelters in the summer months after Easter because they are overwhelmed with rabbits," said Thom. Often, these unwanted rabbits end up euthenized, released into the wild or neglected. Thom said that while many people think domestic rabbits can be released into the wild, in reality it is a death sentence. "They do not have the same survival instincts as wild rabbits and most will not live past the first few days. These unfortunate bunnies usually become victim to either a wild animal or someone's dog," she said. An outdoor hutch is also not an ideal setting for a rabbit. "People get busy with their lives and forget to meet the rabbit's basic needs including food, water and attention. Rabbits require run time out of their cage and desire human contact," said Thom. Pet stores often neglect to inform new owners of other special needs. Domestic rabbits must be spayed or neutered to become good house pets. Otherwise, males will spray and females may become aggressive. Rabbits also reproduce quickly abd due to overpopulation, many wind up euthenized. Carefully research what it means to be a rabbit owner or simply choose an alternative sweet thing for your child -- such as chocolate! I've been a rabbit owner for several years now, and I agree wholeheartedly with the information and intent of this article. Rabbits make excellent pets, but they require more work and attention in keeping them than most people realize. And although it may sound "nice" to get your kid an Easter rabbit, it really isn't. Unless you plan to really take care of it (and that means daily, it's just a waste of everyone's time, and the rabbit ends up suffering the most. Kids lose interest, parents are too busy to take care of it, nobody wants it... You might say "Oh, they're just rabbits." But rabbits are living animals that deserve to be cared for just as much as anything else, especially since pet rabbits can't as easily care for themselves as dogs or cats. If you agree with the article, and think people should be aware of the potential outcome of getting a pet rabbit, then please pass it along. Many of the stray pet and overpopulation problems could be lessened (or even averted) if people just educated themselves more before getting one.
