Posted at October 27, 2013, 2:10 pm: The book is by Robert T. Kiyosaki, with Sharon L. Lechter. It's about the differences between what a rich parent teaches their child about money, and successfully approaching life, from what a poor one does. He had started the book, had written large chunks of it, and she apparently came along and arranged them into a marketable product. The quotes are all from him, though. Both were raised, like many of us were, by people who taught us that hard work and a steady course would pay off in a comfortable lifestyle. The problem, per Kiyosaki, is that post-Gold Standard, the economy is too unstable to offer guaranteed benefits for hard work. I've seen the truth of this in the careers of educated, ethical people in many jobs, who mourn the lack of job stability and curse their entrapment in the rat race. That would be disheartening enough, but the ever-widening gap between the haves and the have-nots suggests that it's increasingly critical to be on the 'haves' side of the equasion. Ever more critical commodities (healthcare, for instance) are available to fewer and fewer. Kiyosaki's story begins when he was 9, excluded from a party because he was "poor" and became curious about money. His highly-educated and gainfully employed (as a teacher) dad had no answers for him to the question "how do I get rich?" As he unspools the story of finding a mentor and learning how money works, there are some great quotes that pinpoint his philosophies: Life does not talk to you. It just sort of pushes you around. Each push is life saying, "wake up. There's something I want you to learn. ...Some give up. Others fight. A few learn the lesson and move on. They welcome life pushing them around. The poor and the middle class work for money. ...The rich have money work for them. Emotion is energy in motion. Emotions are what make us human. Make us real. The word 'emotion' stands for energy in motion. Be truthful about your emotions, and use your mind and emotions in your favor, not against yourself. A job is really a short-term solution to a long term problem. The main cause of poverty or financial struggle is fear and ignorance, not the economy or the government or the rich. It's self-inflicted fear and ignorance that keeps people trapped. As I read through the book, I'll share. Check back for updates, and as always... Discuss.
