recently in the forums a lot of people have mentioned putting effects in the effects loop. i gather this is after the preamp, before the power amp. ive never dealt with an effects loop. how does being in between the preamp and power amp as opposed to before the amp alter your tone and the effect itself.

also, compressors, sonic maximizers, etc etc. a lot of bands i listen to utilize those effects. what exactly do those do, and is it worth it to get a compressor for example, because from what i gather it should be a staple in any rig, but not everyone uses it.

thats basically it. i guess i have high expectations for my guitar tone, but dont have the bankroll to try everything out. if anyones gone down this road and has insight, it would help me a lot.
