Maybe we can make this a stick to held out drummers. I was thinking of making a thread of the cool things you do/try to do. Basically theres 2 things; things that can be used in songs(like my idea) and things that will ussually not be used in songs(like Faiths cool 16ths idea in a dif thread). I'll start.
One of my favorite albums has become Maiden Voyage recently(Tony Williams on drums) and on a song Hello Young Lovers he goes inbetween cut time and common time. He did something which I really thought was cool and I started doing. When he would swing double time he would play his hihats on 2 and 4 without playing the cymbal at the same time so it would be like a wish-woshy effect. So say these are quaters R=ride h=hihat foot RhRhRhRh etc, he would put 8ths in there too sometimes(on the ride cymbal, so h-RR-H-R-H-RR).
What I like to do is to splash the hats and while this is a bit harder it gives it a cooler effect. The best thing about this is that you can reach riduculous speeds without killing youself and while music isn't about indulgence you can use it musically since jazz is a music of listening and responding as well as improvisation. Say your playing a song AABA form and you reach the B and the soloist was building into it you can do that and it'll sound really intense.
Now that I'm thinking about it its sort of like a blast beat and I would accually use a blast beat the same way in rock, I would use it for a bar or 2 when things are really building up.

Anyway post ideas and things you like to do and hopefully we will learn from each other. Also respond to the ideas of others because if theres a flaw to it we need to point it out so that people don't it and so that the person who said it can learn.
