I probably brought this up before but Im still having problems. My band has a fair amount of recording equipment, I pretty big mixer, mics for everything, a pc for recording all the tracks. We dont have a sound engineer, just our bass player trying to learn as he goes. So here's the issue.

My drums never sound like drums recorded in a real studio. In most studio tracks the sound of a tom for isntance lasts maybe half a second. It doesn't sustain for like 3-4 seconds. My bassist added some gating to the mix after it was recorded and it helped a bit, still not perfect though. And how would you attain that sound live? Any ideas would be helpful. We have invested a lot in our equipment, and there would be little sense in stopping now before we get that good studio sound. We are considering paying for some real studio time just to talk to an engineer.

Here are the mics Im using:

Audix i5 - Snare
Audix D2 - Toms
Audix D4 - Floor
Audix D6 - Bass
Generic condensor overheads

The Mixer is Behringer I believe maybe 24 channels

The PC uses some special sound card that accepts multiple inputs (4 i think) from the mixer. And I think he is using Sonor software for recording.
