I have a very general knowledge of timpanis. I play them in school band quite often and the music is often quite simple. But I'm auditioning on them for a competition this year (along with snare) and some of the things in the music I can't entirely figure out. I have two questions:

1) How do you play trill on a timpani (written as 'tr' with a long squiggly [may not be called a trill on timps but it is for woodwind instruments])

2) Am I supposed to actually mute all the drums when I have rests? One section of one of my etudes is written at 98 bpm with a quarter note patter, but instead it's written as four 8th notes alternating with four 8th note rests. There is also a section where I am to play 8th note triplets and then immediately rest. They can't possibly expect anybody to play that fast and mute that fast at the same time, and it is truly impossible with the sticking they suggest. So do I actually have to mute all drums during rests?

Any help appreciated. I know this is a drumset forum or whatever but I figure someone must know something about timps.
