The brainchild of Megadeth’s frontman Dave Mustaine, Gigantour is a heavy metal tour that is in its second year and is roaming the countryside, with dates in other countries soon to happen.

Me and a group of friends were fortunate enough to be able to go to Gigantour this year, and I can say that it was one of the coolest concerts ever. Nearly every band was top notch, and everything was pulled off great.

As many of you heard, I was bitching about Gigantour last year when, due to a ticket snafu, we got into the venue after 2 bands had already gone. Not this year. We arrive about an hour or so before the gates opened, chilled, tailgated, whatnot. The show was at PNC, which I had never been to before, but was quite a cool venue. The whole venue was kind of sunk into the ground, and was a lot smaller then I expected. Which isn’t a bad thing, mind you. Closer to the bands.

The bands:

The Smashup
What could be said about them? I think the only good that came out of this band was their setlist wasn’t very long. Why Mustaine needed to put a punk band on the tour is beyond me. Unmemorable, horrid sound, and just a general lack of polish didn’t help the band’s already poor music.

Sanctity
I’ll admit, we were gonna skip these guys to go see Into Eternity, but there was only 1 stage due to rain earlier in the day. So we thought, eh, might as well stick around and watch them. I was pleasently suprised; the band is damn GOOD. They still had some sound issues, but you could hear everything decently, and every member knows how to play their respective instruments very well. I got some signed stuff by them, and ended up buying a tshirt of theirs, which was helped by the fact that it was only 15 bucks.

Into Eternity
What can I say? I love Into Eternity. They got shafted though...they were only able to play 3 GODDAMN SONGS! Every minute was excellent though. They played Severe Emotional Distress, Splintered Visions, and Beginning Of The End, and all of them were excellent. Even without a second guitarist, they still managed to pull everything off beautifully. I ended up screwing up my neck somehow headbanging to Beginning Of The End. . I managed to get a tshirt signed by them.

Overkill
We didn’t really care about seeing Overkill, so we went and got food and took care of some other stuff through the majority of their set. We came back, and they had the best sound of the night so far, quality wise. They weren’t bad, I’ll give them that. For some reason, their drummer was gone, so they got MIKE FREAKING PORTNOY to fill in on set, which was pretty cool. They were definately a crowd favorite, and you could tell who was drinking a bit too much in the audience by this point.

Arch Enemy
For me, absolute best band of the night. Great setlist, great sound, everything was played perfect, Angela was 500 times better live...everything I could have hoped for. I think they did my neck in...was headbanging too much.

They played:
Nemesis
Dead Eyes See No Future
Dead Bury Their Dead (seamless transition between the two songs)
I Am Legend/Out For Blood (I didn’t know they were gonna play this...this one was really cool)
Ravenous
We Will Rise
The outro to Bridge Of Destiny (THIS was unbelievable. This is probably one of the single greatest outros ever recorded on an album IMO, and it’s unbelievably beautiful. Astonishing.)

Opeth
It’s Opeth. They’re good live. Even without Godhead’s Lament (grumble), they did an excellent job. They had a good sound, aside from the acoustic simulation, and Mike is always the funnyman. “We’re gonna play you some songs that have elements of heavy metal...rock n’ roll...**** rock...and some softer parts, because we like to get chicks.” Martin Axenrot did a good job behind the set. Windowpane could have been a little more subtle drumwise, but he did it better than people were making it out to be.

Setlist:
Ghost Of Perdition
The Leper Affinity (this was ****ing amazing)
Windowpane
Deliverance

Lamb Of God
I don’t like the band that much, but they were high energy. Any band that can get people to start a pit in between sections of a seated venue has some skill. They put on quite a good show, played all the songs that I liked by them, had a birthday cake for their bassist, and got the crowd into it.

Megadeth
Megadeth sucks.

I kid. Last year when we saw them, the sound levels were godawful. First of all, the venue almost fell down because it was so damn loud, and you couldn’t hear Mustaine one bit. Come to think of it, you couldn’t really hear ANYTHING. Just a bunch of noise. This year, the sound was EXCELLENT, some of the best I’ve heard. Of course, nearly everyone was there for Megadeth, young and old alike (and there were some OLD *** people there), which gave the concert that special feel. I was very happy that I could recognize most of the songs. Some highlights were Take No Prisoners (best shoutalong chorus ever), Symphony Of Destruction (we all knew the words to this one), Peace Sells (Deth got all the vocalists from all the bands to come out and sing “Peace sells, but who’s buyin?”), Washington’s Next (good riffs), and, of course, Holy Wars. And there was FIRE!

So. In conclusion, if you can go to Gigantour, GO TO ****ING GIGANTOUR!
