Religious people, new age hippies and kids with the tl;dr syndrome beware, because ITT I question the very foundation of human life, as I present another system for humans that would wipe the floor with our current system. (For part one see: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=489764) So, thanks to evolution, we humans have so called feelings (h5 out to all my emo kids), and our lives nowadays basically revolve around feelings. We want to feel in certain ways, for example happy, so we try to do things that make us feel that way. The tools we use to achieve this are our senses. We use our senses to collect information about the outside world. Depending on the information, we will get different feelings. But what is a feeling? Well kids, there are no magic fingers involved here. Feelings are nothing but chemical reactions and electric impulses taking place in your brain. It's all chemically/biologically explainable, even though we can't explain it all yet. Example: Jimmy bungee jumps. As he falls towards the ground, his senses gives his brain information about the outside world, and this information triggers certain functions/reactions in his brain. Thus he gets feelings, i.e. fear, excitement etc. So what we humans do, is that we manipulate the outside world (for example by bungee jumping) so that our senses will get the kind of information that will trigger the reactions in our brain that we want. If you want to feel sad, you manipulate the world around you for example by putting on some Chingy (R.I.P rap music) or by looking at dead kitties. This information which your senses collect from this outside world will then trigger the reactions in your brain that makes you feel sad. If you want to feel happy, maybe you go to an amusement park, start a family or look at dead kitties, to create an outside world that via your senses triggers the happy-functions in your brain. Now, this whole thing sucks. We depend on the outside world and our senses to feel like we want to feel. What kind of body is that, that can't even create feelings on its own, but requires information from the outside world to create feelings? A piece of crap, that's what it is. Because alot of people are not able to manipulate their outside world in a way that makes their senses trigger the brain reactions that they want. So many don't feel like they would want to feel. So, it would be better if you could cut out the middle hands; the outside world and your senses, and go straight to the boss, the brain. This is something alot of people already do today, by taking different drugs. Drugs affect the brain directly without going via the senses. They increase/decrease/disrupt/start/in other ways affect the processes in your brain that control feelings, and thus make you feel different. But the drugs we have today are pretty unsophisticated. In the future, as we learn more about our brain, we will learn precisely which processes and substances control our different feelings, and we will learn how to influence these. Basically: let's say the feeling of happiness depends on the amount of the substance X in your brain. If we can manually add more of X to the brain, or manually encourage the brain process that produces X, we can increase happiness. The same goes for all other feelings. Sweet right? Now we don't depend on our senses to create feelings for us anymore. And since we in the future can let robots/machines take care of us, we wouldn't need our senses for surviving either. So we wouldn't need senses at all. No need for the visual system or hearing, no need for anything. The feelings you get by listening to music/talking to people/looking at things/etc could be manually controlled directly in your brain, so you would not actually need to listen to music/talk to people/look at things in order to get those feelings. Instead you just add substances to your brain or give electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain, to trigger these feelings. Because that's what the brain normally does based on the information it gets from the senses, but now you could control it yourself and therefore control what feelings you want to have. And if you don't need senses, why do you need a body? Bodies are just a huge waste of energy, everything happens in the brain anyway. So all we need is the brain. It would need to lie in a liquid filled container (like an aquarium), with constant circulation of the liquid. Blood would not be needed, as the brain could take up oxygen, nutriments and other substances directly from the liquid in the container. This whole thing would be set up in big automatized facilities run by unintelligent but precise computers, taking care of thousands of brains in separate containers (They would also run power plants and all other related work, since all humans are in the facilities. Reproduction is the tricky part, but it could probably by taken care of by using cloning and artificial uteruses). And as you're lying there chillin' in your container, you use brain-computer link systems (such as BrainGate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrainGate) to control a computer without having to have muscles. With this computer, you control precisely what feelings you want to feel. If you tell the computer you want to feel happy, the happy substance X is released into the liquid in your container, and thus you feel happy. The same for all other feelings. You control the amount of different substances in the liquid, and you can manually send electrical impulses trough electrodes - so, you can control exactly how you want to feel. gg brain.
