EBAY IS NOT ALWAYS A SAFE PLACE IN WHICH TO TRADE.

eBay is the premier internet auction house on the planet, conducting tens of thousands of transactions every day to buyers and sellers around the globe. They pledge to do their utmost to "ensure a safe trading environment" for all members. Being a longtime eBay member, I never questioned that pledge, having successfully conducted hundreds of transactions over a 3-year period.

Imagine my surprise when they left me out to dry.

Unfortunately, there are people out there for whom sabotaging an auction is an entertaining pastime. A "Newbie" (first time dealer) has done this to me on three consecutive auctions. She wins the auction, with no intention of paying. The information she gives eBay is false, including her telephone number, so she can't be contacted. Each time she's done it, it's been under a different eBay name.

I reported her to eBay and all they've done to date is cancel her membership, which achieves absolutely nothing and doesn't deter her one wit. She just goes in and registers under another name, once again giving false background information and then proceeds to sabotage another of my auctions.

EBay has provided buyers and sellers with feedback files which are designed to be a means of expressing either approval or disapproval of any given transaction. The first time she sabotaged my auction, I gave her negative feedback. She retaliated by giving me one back, making all kinds of untrue allegations, along with being extremely rude and offensive.

I contacted eBay and complained. They shrugged their corporate shoulders and informed me that under their rules, anyone is free to say anything they like in a feedback, regardless of whether it's true or not. In fact, here's what they stated:

"While the feedback comment would not be removable based on it being slanderous or untrue…"

They went on to state that only under extreme circumstances will they remove a negative feedback. I have yet to understand what represents an "extreme circumstance." I would've thought that, having been victimized by this Newbie was reason enough to eliminate any feedback she'd choose to make, especially since her remarks were
definitely slanderous. But no, this isn't eBay's policy.

Under the circumstances, it's hardly surprising that I have not given her negative feedback for her second and third offenses. Ebay's attitude towards vindictive negative feedbacks makes a mockery of the entire purposes for which it was designed.

I have repeatedly asked eBay for help in dealing with this Newbie. All I get in return are computer generated blurbs, and the occasional email from a member of their staff, telling me I can report her for non-payment, and put in a claim for credit on the commissions eBay will charge me for these non purchases. Which raises another problem eBay refuses to address: since I can no longer sell anything on eBay under my present account, I cannot avail myself of this credit against future sales.

It is my contention that no commission should be charged in cases where eBay is fully aware that an auction has not been honoured, and there's definite proof of bad faith such as false background information having been given.

EBay does absolutely nothing to protect its sellers from people like this Newbie. I've made suggestions on how they could help prevent such people from bidding but eBay has ignored them all.

EBay likes to call itself a "safe place in which to trade." That is a blanket statement that has no validity. It is only safe as long as you don't run across some malicious, spiteful person who likes nothing better than to destroy your auctions. At this point, you're on your own.

Just go and leave a response to the negative feedback, explaining your...

Leaving negative feedback to a buyer is a poor business decision.
