Posted at June 13, 2006, 1:34 pm: Well, at the very least, I'm getting faster My last painting which was about the same size took 2 weeks and it was black and white... I'm only 4 days into this painting, one of which was spent entirely repositioning the eye and the lips (you can see what im talking about in the progress images below). If I planned a little more carefully, I could have saved another day So here it is My initial intention was to make it a mannerist piece, which is why the neck is so long. Unfortunately, I got too caught up in rendering the image, so now it just looks like she has a freakishly long neck. And you can tell that the photos were taken in different lighting situations. I really need to learn how to correct my photos Started off pretty loose, blocking out some basic values. (Looking back in hindsight, I wish I kept it loose for the entire process Started working out the details a little more.Filled in the eyes, nose and lips.Blocked out some basic highlights Started pushing the contrast a bit more.Added near blacks and worked up the background... I dunno why I did this. Probably should have held off on the background Messed with the eye and the lips.Added an eye-patch. I was initially a bit concerned with the eye-patch. I didn't want it to look like I was hiding her other eye because I can't draw it. But I went with it anyway. Detailed the face and neck more Added the ribbon at the bottom for text. Don't know what it will say yet.Added the skull and cross bones to the eye patch.Fixed the back lighting to make the figure pop more.Noticed the uni-boob problem. I'm going to probably hint at the left breast with some back-lighting.Also note that the canvas runs about a 1/2 inch further in each direction... the ribbon doesn't run up against the edge like that To do:Fix where the nose meets the forehead.Fix the neckFix her shoulderFix the uni-breast situation.Detail the ribbon.Add text Some detailed shots So I'm pretty happy with the brush strokes in the face area. The one area I'm not so jazzed about is where the nose meets the forehead. Any suggestions? Also, my intent was to let some of the background color "bleed" into the shadows of the face. You can sort of see that to the right of her lips, but I'm not sure if I was too successful in pulling it off Detail shot of the neck. Although I'm happy with the brush strokes on the neck, it looks too cylindrical (which a co-worker pointed out). I know what I SHOULD be doing (make it a little more box-like), but I'm not sure how to go about it. Thoughts Again, my intent was to let the background bleed into the shadows of the neck where it's the darkest. You can see this under the chin a bit... Not sure if I pulled it off though. Thoughts Crits? Original of the message was taken from http://www.conceptart.org/forums/ Replies:I wish you'd left off after stage two or three.I agree. Yeah. Thanks for the comments thus far. well.
