Anyone wondering what role the clarinet can assume in current jazz needs immediately to listen to Eddie Daniels. Daniels is a remarkably versatile musician, adept in classical playing (as "The Five Seasons" demonstrates) and in a wide range of jazz idioms. Much of his playing on "Collection" shows him to be influenced by the general soprano saxophone style of Wayne Shorter and Ernie Watts. So there's one answer: The clarinet can do everything the soprano saxophone can do and just a bit more musically and more expressively. Daniels is a musician who refuses to be hampered by ephemeral, myopic prejudices, and the results are magnificent.
