That's right, a solid state amp!

I know, I have committed blasphamy, but please hear me out.

I'm not going to be playing any gigs (at least not with my electric, I pick banjo in a band however). I don't play guitar in hopes of being fameous or making a living. I play guitar to have FUN. I play for my own enjoyment. I don't care about having the best gear or the sickest tone as long as I'm having fun!

This said, I sold my Peavey Classic 30 about 6 months ago. I'm in the market for a new amp. It will be used almost 100% for metal/rock. So it's important that I have a good distortion channel on it. I'm interested in a decent solid state (or hybrid).

Why a SS (or hybrid) amp? Well, like I said. I'm not going to be overly picky about my tone and I don't need to tube wattage for gigs. So I'd like to save some money and get something SS/Hybrid. Although very nice, I don't feel the need to put a lot of money into a Mesa or Marshall just for playing in my house and having fun. For instances, my Classic 30 was nice, but it was overkill for what I needed.

Anyway, I don't know a whole lot about these types of amps. I would appreciate it very much if someone could give me a recommendation. My budget is around $500 but that's not set in stone. It must have solid distortion for ac/dc to slayer and let's say around 75ish watts or higher as I may jam with my guitar buds sometime.

Any ideas?

I was considering getting a POD XT or XT Live and hooking it up to a keyboard amp. Anyone have experience with this? If so, recommend an amp or other amplification source? I would really like to go this route. I thought it would be fun to play around with the patches (would suit my needs well also).

I know this will be hard for many of you to understand but please avoid the "tube rules, go tube Noob" etc. remarks. Please show some respect.

Thank You, I'll owe you guys one.
(seriously, I don't make promises I can't keep!)
